Air Quality Monitoring

The DNR Ambient Air Monitoring group organizes and plans air monitoring activities within the State of Iowa. Federal monitoring requirements are set by EPA rules. The ambient monitoring staff works with EPA Region 7 and the Local Programs in Polk and Linn counties to develop a monitoring plan for the State. The State contracts with the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory and the Polk and Linn County Local Programs to collect air monitoring data, quality assure the results, and report the data to the public. Members of the air monitoring group develop and administer these contracts. Ambient air monitoring staff also perform data analysis, help to site monitors, and participate in monitoring work- groups at the state and national levels.

Real Time Air Monitoring Data

Real-time air quality monitoring information, including the location of monitors and their current readings, can be found on the Current Air Quality site here.

Animal Feeding Operation Special Study

The DNR has begun a field study of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia concentrations near large animal feeding operations. Field personel are also collecting odor data near animal feeding facilities and fields where manure was recently applied, as well as public areas and residences where complaints have been received. Interim study results can be viewed here.
