On-Stream Impoundment Restoration Fund Grant Program

Application Deadline: November 5, 2021

The Iowa Legislature appropriated funds for fiscal year 2022 to develop on-stream impoundment restoration projects. These funds (up to $500,000 for FY22) are available competitively to protect, maintain, and enhance these popular recreation destinations and their related watersheds. Eligible on-stream impoundments include those that meet all of the following criteria:

  • owned by the state of Iowa, a county, a municipal government, or a public entity organized under chapter 357E;
  • has a watershed-to-body of water ratio of not less than 200:1 and not more than 1000:1;
  • is a public body of water with public access;
  • has a surface water area of at least 10 acres;
  • has diverse water depths capable of supporting aquatic vegetation;
  • is a multi-use system capable of supporting diverse wildlife, fish and recreational opportunities; and
  • is not used solely as a water supply reservoir.

Eligible entities are encouraged to apply for this cost-share grant program. A team of representatives from the DNR, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, a County entity, and a Municipality will score the applications. Points will be awarded based on the overall quality of the application, project narrative and budget, and milestone schedule. Applications that are able to provide a 1:1 match for funds administered through this grant program and include funding for watershed improvement practices will be prioritized for funding. There is no minimum cost share requirement for this cycle.
