Iowa Hunting Laws and Weapons Permit Applicability

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Shooting Sports Program!

The goals of the DNR Shooting Sports Program are as follows:

  • Introduce Iowans to the target shooting sports
  • Promote existing target shooting programs
  • Provide new target shooting programs
  • Provide assistance to in-school programs where possible
  • Provide more shooting facilities
  • Improve existing facilities

By providing programs and facilities for the shooting sports, the DNR will help ensure the future of hunting, shooting and outdoor conservation for generations to come. Target shooting is a lifetime sport that families can enjoy together and is one of the safest activities available today.

In addition, target shooting teaches the fundamental marksmanship skills required for hunting and provides multiple avenues for families to get involved in hunting and other outdoor pursuits.

Iowa DNR Clay Target Trap Grant Program
Applications for clay target trap machine grants opens on September 1, 2011.  Public and private schools or shooting facilities/teams in Iowa sponsoring Iowa High School / Scholastic Clay Target Program (IAHS/SCTP) may apply.  Applicants must apply for funds for the purposes of acquiring clay target trap machines approved for use in the IAHS/SCTP (trap, skeet and/or sporting clays). Trap machines must be made available to IAHS/SCTP teams, and IAHS/SCTP teams will have priority over all other users. Grantees agree to maintain teams and the equipment for a period of five (5) years.

In partnership with Midway USA Foundation, Inc. the Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program, Inc. and Iowa Department of Natural Resources are proud to announce the Target Incentive Program (TIP). The TIP program is designed to help both school and club based competitive clay target programs raise money and establish a perpetual trust fund from which teams can draw from. The TIP program creates a simple, straightforward way for local programs to establish and contribute to a fund to help support their teams for the future.
