This position works under the general direction of the Chief Range Safety Officer/Range Manager and the Shooting Sports Coordinator and performs a variety of tasks ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the shooting ranges.

Job Title: Range Safety Officer, Conservation and Recreation Division
Starting Pay: $13.12 per Hour
Locations: Banner Shooting Range, Indianola, IA – 1 Vacancies
Olofson Shooting Range, Polk City, IA – 2 Vacancies
Hours: Variable, rotating schedule:
Weekdays: 11:00AM to 5:00PM
Weekends: 9:00AM to 5:00PM
Special Events/Programs: Occasional Evenings
Limit of 779 hours per fiscal year
The Department of Natural Resources has one (1) openings at Banner Shooting Range and two (2) openings at Olofson Shooting Range for Range Safety Officers. This position works under the general direction of the Chief Range Safety Officer/Range Manager and the Shooting Sports Coordinator and performs a variety of tasks ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the shooting ranges. Additional responsibilities include:
ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of safe handling and use of firearms; ability to use PC based software at a basic level; ability to operate cash register and reconcile daily and weekly financial reports; excellent organizational skills; excellent oral communication skills; ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, other DNR staff, state and federal agencies; ability to read and interpret rules and regulations; ability to gather, assemble, analyze facts, draw conclusions and develop solutions to organizational/program problems; capacity to adjust to change, work pressures or difficult situations without undue stress; ability to work independently; must demonstrate initiative, a customer service and team orientation and display high standards of ethical conduct; ability to become certified as a range safety officer, first aid, and CPR; position requires regular attendance as scheduled and occasionally on-call.

The Butch Olofson Shooting Range has been completely renovated with the addition of a new building, archery ranges and more. A new classroom for hunting and firearm education activities will be open to a variety of audiences.
We welcome shooters of all skill levels to hone their shooting skills at the four ranges.
Along with providing a place for shooters of all skill levels to practice with their bows and firearms, the range will be host to numerous special events throughout the year, such as high school archery and trap shooting matches.
Safety is the top priority at Olofson and we need your help to keep everyone safe.
