Construction

Construction/renovation projects are scheduled in several of our state parks. They range from upgrading campgrounds to building cabins, renovating shelters to repairing parking lots and sidewalks. Following is a list of the major construction projects being undertaken and their proposed completion dates.

Please be aware that some of these projects will require the closing of specific facilities and that heavy equipment may be in operation within the parks. Construction vehicles, both small and large, may be on the roads. Please respect fencing and warnings to stay out of construction zones for both yours' and the contractor's safety.

When planning a park visit it is recommended that you call the park to confirm completion dates since construction is weather dependent.

Green Valley - Union County
The lake renovation project continues at Green Valley. The dredging project began in February of 2010 and due to extremely wet year has been on hold until August. Dredging will likely continue into the fall and early winter of 2010. The lake will remain 12 feet below normal pool until the dredging is finished, so the beach and boat ramps will be closed the entire 2010 recreation season. The fishery has been renovated and restocked. The fish are growing well but it will likely be another year before they reach an acceptable size. In-lake projects such as fish habitat structures, shoreline improvement, jetty and boat ramp repairs have been completed. The new overflow spillway is also finished. Another camping cabin has been added along with the two existing cabins. The renovated campground and new playground are open. Camping is on a first/come first/serve basis. Beginning in August road construction began on Green Valley Road and 140th St., the main roads into and around the park. The park is open during the road construction but access is from the north. From Creston take Cherry St. north to 110th St, turn west on 110th for one mile to Green Valley Road, turn south on Green Valley Road for two miles to 130th St., turn west on 130th St. The last three miles are on a gravel road. For additional information contact the park office at 641-782-5131 or via email at green_valley@dnr.iowa.gov. (updated 8/30/10)
