State Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Plan

Iowa has a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities available across the state. On any given evening, you can hear the youth playing at the ballpark; see the hikers, bikers, and runners on our trails; smell the burgers cooking in the campgrounds; and hear the splash and excitement of a big fish landed. These activities and many others year round, are available to Iowans because federal, state, county, and city agencies are committed to natural resources protection as well as creating enjoyable outdoor recreational opportunities.

The purpose of the 2013 Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) titled "Outdoor Recreation in Iowa" is to assess the supply of, and demand for, outdoor recreational opportunities. This action plan is the first phase in outdoor recreation planning for our state. Over the next year, an implementation plan for outdoor recreation will be developed for the Department of Natural Resources and the following three years will be dedicated to working with our partners and improving outdoor recreation for our citizens.
