Fishing Forecast

Lake Geode was renovated in the early 80's to remove a problem gizzard shad population. Since then Lake Geode has developed into one of the premier bluegill lakes in the state producing good catches of 8 to 10 inch bluegills every year. Crappies are of a good size with many in the 10-12 inch size range but not in high numbers. There is a very high population of Largemouth Bass in the lake with surveys showing up to 140 bass per hour of electrofishing. A majority of these bass are under the 15" length limit which is not uncommon in lakes with a high panfish harvest. Redear sunfish are another sought after species in Geode with fish over 10 inches being caught on a regular basis.(2007)

Iowa-Caught Fish Are Safe to Eat, In Almost All Cases

The vast majority of Iowa’s streams, rivers and lakes offer safe and high-quality fish that pose little or no threat to human health if consumed. Some limitations may apply for young children and pregnant women. Here’s a Fish Consumption Fact Sheet from the Iowa DNR and the Iowa Dept. of Public Health for more information. Here is a list of current fish consumption advisories for Iowa lakes and rivers.
