A free, one-day workshop designed to help local communities redevelop brownfield sites on June 6 in Cedar Rapids and June 7 in Des Moines. It’s 10 o’clock on a summer night along a gravel road anywhere in Iowa. In the farm pond next to the road, a raucous chorus of male frogs are making themselves heard as they vie for mates. A volunteer stands clipboard in hand, ear cocked, mentally sorting out each of the calling species which are using this seemingly ordinary pond.

POLK CITY, Iowa - The Olofson shooting range in Polk City will be hosting a series on learning to hunt turkeys beginning Feb. 26. The four part series will be held from 6-9 p.m., on Tuesdays through March 19. There is a fee of $15 per session and participants can attend any number of sessions.

Polk City, Iowa - The Olofson Shooting Range, at Big Creek State Park, has scheduled more than 70 outdoor skills programs open to the public in 2019, including hunter education, hand gun basics, taxidermy, Dutch oven cooking, how to use a trail camera and more. Programs begin on Jan. 16 with a course on cleaning and storing guns.

Hunter Education Classroom courses are offered by knowledgeable and certified volunteer instructors and Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers. Classroom courses are typically 12-15 hours in length and are held over 2 to 3 sessions (days). In order to receive certification, a student must attend all sessions and pass the final exam.

Industrial and commercial facilities with "stormwater discharge associated with industrial activity" are required to obtain NPDES permits, known as General Permits #1 and #3.  A new training opportunity has been developed to help those facilities understand their permitting requirements, develop pollution prevention plans, and implement best management practices with the goal of staying in compliance.
