Public Meeting on SO2 Nonattainment in Muscatine
The Department of Natural Resources Air Quality Bureau will hold a public meeting on October 3 at the Muscatine County Conservation Board’s Environmental Learning Center. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the timelines, requirements, and preliminary plans for addressing the 1-hour sulfur dioxide (SO2) nonattainment designation in Muscatine.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has designated the City of Muscatine and areas around the city in nonattainment for the 1-hour SO2 National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS). This designation will become effective on October 4. A nonattainment area is designated when outdoor (ambient) air pollution levels violate the NAAQS. EPA determined that the SO2 monitor located at Musser Park in Muscatine violated the 1-hour NAAQS for SO2.
When an area is designated in nonattainment, the state is required to submit a State Implementation Plan (SIP) demonstrating how it will meet the SO2 standard within five years. The SIP is due 18 months after the effective date of the final designation.
