BOW Workshop 2019

Becoming an Outdoors Woman - Iowa

Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) is an international program aimed primarily at women, but is an opportunity for anyone 18 years or older to learn outdoor skills usually associated with hunting and fishing, but useful for many outdoor pursuits. Check out the BOW Brochure for more information!

The workshop is for you if...

  • you have never tried these activities, but have hoped for an opportunity to learn.
  • you are a beginner who hopes to improve your skills.
  • you know how to do some of these activities, but would like to try your hand at some new ones.
  • you are looking for the camaraderie of like-minded individuals.

The goal of the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) scholarship program is to broaden participation in the weekend workshop to women 18 years old and older who would be unable to attend without financial assistance. BOW encourages anyone to apply for a scholarship. However, preference will be given to first-time attendees and those promoting diversity in outdoors education across the state through their community affiliations, culture, region, and/or profession.

  • Scholarship Application
  • 2020 BOW: Scholarship applications due by August 15, 2020.
  • 2020 BOW: Scholarship winners will be notified by September 1, 2020.

Beyond BOW virtual workshops:

Want to learn more about cooking in the great outdoors? Beyond BOW is hosting a series of three virtual outdoor cooking classes focused on breakfast. Join us Saturday, December 12, 2020, Saturday, January 16, 2021, and Saturday, February 6, 2021. All of these classes will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will last for about 90 minutes. The event is scheduled for 90 minutes and will include a short break around the halfway point. Questions and answers will be covered at the end of the session and may extend beyond the scheduled stop time.

We plan on sending out an ingredient list for each session ahead of time so you can cook right along with us. We will have a very relaxed format so participants can ask questions as we go. The sessions will be led by Christina Roelofs, Naturalist for the Shelby County Conservation Board and Iowa DNR, Shawnell Richter and Lydia Goehring, both outdoor cooking enthusiasts and Becoming an Outdoors-Woman instructors.

This workshop has been made possible by the Iowa Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Program. This workshop is open to both residents and non-residents and any adult 18 years age or older. Younger participants may sign up for the webinar if accompanied by an adult.
