Anamosa’s David Machart became Iowa’s top scholastic archer during the 2016 National Archery in the Schools Program State Championship March 4-5. Machart won the 3D target and the bullseye target competition with identical near perfect scores of 299 out of 300.
Machart outshot Benjamin May, from Iowa Christian Academy, who had a score of 295; Logan Kelly, 2015 state champion, from Mount Vernon, with the score 294; Kendal Stokes, from Sergeant Buff-Luton, at 292; and Sarah Kuhlman, from West Des Moines Valley, at 292. The tie between Stokes and Kuhlman for fourth place was determined based on the amount of tens shot during the competition – Stokes 24 – Kuhlman 23.
Scholarships totaling $8,000 were awarded to the top seniors and runners-up in the bullseye and 3D competitions. Scholarships were provided by the Iowa Bowhunters Association, Iowa State Archery Association, Pheasants Forever, Safari Club International, Whitetails Unlimited and National Archery in the Schools Program.
With a record number of 1,285 archers competing in the bullseye target competition and 422 archers in the inaugural 3D competition, the 2016 state tournament became a two day event. The state tournament also moved venues from the Deer Classic at Hy-Vee Hall to the Jacobson Exhibition Center at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
