Rains closing park and forest trails, damages Ledges State Park Road

While recent rains have cause minimal impact to state parks, people planning park visits are reminded to check current conditions before heading out.

 “Seasonal rains can be localized and travelers may not be aware of the impacts to area trails and campgrounds,” reminds DNR State Park Bureau chief Todd Coffelt. “It’s always a good idea to check out the closure information on our website or call individual park offices to find out latest information.”

Currently, weather-related closures include:

Ledges State Park, in Boone County, has closed Canyon Drive to vehicle traffic due to roadway damage, and will not reopen the road until repairs can be made. Park visitors are allowed to hike into the canyon area and park facilities such as the campground, picnic areas, parking lots, trails and shelters remain open and accessible. For the most up-to-date information on Ledges State Park conditions, call the park office at 515-432-1852.

Equestrian trails at Stephens State Forest, in Lucas County, are currently closed due to wet conditions. Questions can be directed to the forest headquarters at 641-774-4559.

Equestrian trails are closed at Waubonsie State Park, in Fremont County, due to recent heavy rainfall. Call the park office at 712-382-2786 with any questions.

All multi-use trails are Elk Rock State Park, in Marion County, are closed due to recent precipitation. Questions can be directed to the park office at 641-842-6008.
