DECORAH, Iowa – DNR Field Office staff received a report of a fish kill on an unnamed tributary to Bohemian Creek on Thursday, July 23.

Bohemian Creek runs through the town of Protivin, located in Howard County.

DNR Fisheries staff were on-site and conducting a fish count. Initial reports are approximately 5,000 non-game dead fish were observed in the half-mile stretch of the tributary. No dead fish were observed in Bohemian Creek.

Water sample tests for ammonia were conducted and returned negative and samples were taken to test for pesticides—those results will return in a week. No source for the fish kill has been identified at this time. DNR staff continue to monitor the situation to determine a source.
