DES MOINES – The DNR will hold a public stakeholder meeting to answer questions and collect public comments on the renewal of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) wastewater general permit for mining and processing facility discharges.

The stakeholder meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. on June 17 in Meeting Room A, located at 3520 86th St. in Urbandale.

Mining and Processing Facility Discharges General Permit 5 (GP5) will expire on July 19, 2021. The Iowa DNR proposes to initiate rulemaking to renew the permit for a third five-year term. The proposed GP5 has received updated formatting, edits to simplify and improve clarity, and the inclusion of applicable hazardous condition reporting requirements.

A draft showing the proposed changes is available online https://www.iowadnr.gov/Environmental-Protection/Water-Quality/NPDES-Wastewater-Permitting/NPDES-General-Permits/GP5-Mining-Processing.

People may ask questions on the proposed permit and make oral comments at the public meeting, or may submit written comments through June 24 to David Schelling, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, 502 E. Ninth St. Des Moines, Iowa 50319-0034; fax at 515-725-8202; or by email, including the commenter’s name, to David.Schelling@dnr.iowa.gov.
