    District-Wide Trout Stream Fishing Report

Trout streams in Mitchell County are unfishable. Several bridges washed out. Dry fly action slowed somewhat with the end of the Dark Hendrickson hatch and high water issues. March Browns should be coming off towards the end of May or early June as it gets warmer. Try a #12 Brown Adams or similar large Drake pattern for the March Brown hatch. Good searching flies at present for rising trout include #16 and #14 Adams, Griffith Gnats or Caddis patterns. Wet flies and various streamers also work.

The vast majority of Iowa’s streams, rivers and lakes offer safe and high-quality fish that pose little or no threat to human health if consumed. Some limitations may apply for young children and pregnant women. Here’s a Fish Consumption Fact Sheet from the Iowa DNR and the Iowa Dept. of Public Health for more information. Here is a list of current fish consumption advisories for Iowa lakes and rivers.
