Bluegill - Slow: Use small jigs or worms around brush.
Crappie - Slow: Some fish are being caught drifting in open water.
Largemouth Bass - Slow: Crankbaits and soft plastics fished around shallow rock has been working.
The lake valve has now been opened and the lake is slowly beginning to drain. There will be relaxed fishing regulations beginning Saturday, May 16. There are no length or bag limits for any species at this lake. Watch for news releases and the DNR website (www.iowadnr.gov) for details.

Fishing Forecast

The lake is planned to have a renovation beginning right after Memorial Day. The lake will be drawn down, the shorelines will be deepened and rocked, the bottom dredged, fish habitat placed, and fish will be eliminated and eventually restocked at the completion of the project. The presence of yellow bass and abundance of common carp are the reason for the fish eradication. Anglers will still have the upcoming spring to fish. Bluegill numbers are moderate with many fish in the 6-8" range. Crappie numbers are good with most being 8-9". Largemouth bass numbers are fair and most are 11-14".(2014)

Iowa-Caught Fish Are Safe to Eat, In Almost All Cases

The vast majority of Iowa’s streams, rivers and lakes offer safe and high-quality fish that pose little or no threat to human health if consumed. Some limitations may apply for young children and pregnant women. Here’s a Fish Consumption Fact Sheet from the Iowa DNR and the Iowa Dept. of Public Health for more information. Here is a list of current fish consumption advisories for Iowa lakes and rivers.
