Bluegill numbers are fair with most fish being 4-7". The larger crappies have not been seen since spring and most fish this fall were 7-9". If the bigger ones are still out there, they will be 11-13". Largemouth bass numbers look to be on the rise and most fish are 10-17". White bass numbers are moderate with most being 10-14". Walleyes and saugeyes are difficult to sample here, but there should be many smaller fish, with walleyes up to 28" available. Channel catfish and flathead catfish numbers are down due to last winter's winter kill, but numbers are still good and most channels are in the 1-8 pound range and flatheads up to 40-50 pounds.(2015)

Iowa-Caught Fish Are Safe to Eat, In Almost All Cases

The vast majority of Iowa’s streams, rivers and lakes offer safe and high-quality fish that pose little or no threat to human health if consumed. Some limitations may apply for young children and pregnant women. Here’s a Fish Consumption Fact Sheet from the Iowa DNR and the Iowa Dept. of Public Health for more information. Here is a list of current fish consumption advisories for Iowa lakes and rivers.
