DRAKESVILLE — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating a manure release near the entrance of Lake Wapello State Park in Davis County.

At approximately 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, the DNR Field Office in Washington was notified of an overturned semi tanker hauling manure outside Lake Wapello State Park on Eagle Boulevard. Approximately 6000-6500 gallons of manure spilled into the road ditch near the entrance of the park. Park staff constructed a dam to prevent manure from entering PeeDee Creek.

There is no impact to Lake Wapello State Park or PeeDee Creek, and the park remains open to visitors. The manure was being hauled by Bontrager Hauling, LLC.

No dead fish have been observed in PeeDee Creek. Clean-up is underway.  Manure was being pumped back onto another manure hauling tanker for land application.

The incident remains under investigation, and the department will evaluate appropriate enforcement action following the investigation.
