DES MOINES – The DNR Water Quality Bureau has the following draft water use permits posted for public review. Water use permits regulate how Iowa’s water resources are allocated to ensure facilities use water efficiently and responsibly, at rates and quantities consistent with permit conditions. 

As part of the permit review process, the public has the right, and is encouraged, to comment on draft water use permits. Riverstone Group (Le Claire Quarry Mc38) requests a major modification to their existing water use permit (1024-R8) to withdrawal water from one intake in their mine pit sump located on land generally described as the N ½ of Section 35 and the E ½ of the NE ¼ of Section 34, all in T79N, R05E, Scott County, Iowa, in the maximum quantity of 920.70 Acre-Feet per Year (AFY) (approximately 300 Million Gallons per Year) at a maximum pumping rate of 4,475.00 Gallons Per Minute (GPM), and concurrently, discontinue direct surface water withdrawals from McCarty Creek, reducing its requested allocation to 0.00 AFY and its maximum pumping rate to 0 GPM, all for limestone quarry operations located on said land.

The current permit allows a total allocation of 368.10 AFY at a maximum pumping rate of 2,000 GPM. The request represents a total allocation increase of 552 AFY and an increase in maximum pumping rate by 2,475 GPM.

The Department has determined that this use of water conforms to the relevant criteria (Iowa Code Chapter 455B and Iowa Administrative Code 567) and recommends the permit be granted.
