DES MOINES – The DNR Water Quality Bureau has the following draft water use permits posted for public review. Water use permits regulate how Iowa’s water resources are allocated to ensure facilities use water efficiently and responsibly, at rates and quantities consistent with permit conditions.
As part of the permit review process, the public has the right, and is encouraged, to comment on draft water use permits. The City of Odebolt requests a newly-modified water use permit authorizing withdrawals of water from two Odebolt Creek alluvial aquifer wells, 30 and 42 feet deep, located on land generally described as the NW ¼ of the SE ¼ of the Section 28, and from one Cambrian-Ordovician (Jordan Sandstone) aquifer well, 2,131 feet deep, located on land generally described as the NE ¼ of the NW ¼ of Section 34, T87N, R38W, Sac County, Iowa, in the maximum quantity of 60 million gallons per year at a maximum rate of 520 gallons per minute throughout each year for municipal purposes within and without the permittee's corporate limits consistent with its municipal distribution system and other provisions of law.
The proposed permit modification represents no change to the instantaneous pumping capacity, but an increase in maximum annual capacity from 55 million gallons per year to 60 million gallons per year to facilitate operational flexibility.
The Department has determined that this use of water conforms to the relevant criteria (Iowa Code Chapter 455B and Iowa Administrative Code 567) and recommends the permit be granted.

Viking Aggregates requests a new water use permit to withdraw water from one surface water intake on the “Valhalla Pit” located on land generally described as the W ½ of the NW ¼, the W ½ of the SW ¼ of Section 35, and the SE ¼ of the NE 1/4, and the E ½ of the SE ¼ of Section 35 lying east of the South Skunk River, all in T82N, R23W, Story County, Iowa, in the maximum quantity of 1,000 million gallons per year at a maximum rate of 20,000 gallons per minute, during times of the year when the surface water is not frozen (approximately mid-March to December each year), all for washing and processing of sand and gravel from a quarry, located on said land. After washing and processing, the water will drain back into the pit lake.
The Department has determined that this use of water conforms to the relevant criteria (Iowa Code Chapter 455B and Iowa Administrative Code 567) and recommends the permit be granted.
