DES MOINES – The DNR Water Quality Bureau has the following draft water use permits posted for public review. Water use permits regulate how Iowa’s water resources are allocated to ensure facilities use water efficiently and responsibly, at rates and quantities consistent with permit conditions.
As part of the permit review process, the public has the right, and is encouraged, to comment on draft water use permits. Jasper County

The City of Newton requests a permit modification to withdraw water from one proposed Jordan aquifer well, approximately 2,200 feet deep, located on land generally described as the SW ¼ of the SW ¼ of Section 18, T79N, R19W, and one existing Jordan aquifer well, approximately 2,200 feet deep, located on land generally described as the SE ¼ of the NE ¼ Section 13, T79N, R20W, and from nineteen existing and four proposed Skunk River alluvial aquifer wells, each approximately 44 to 66 feet deep, located on land generally described as the SE ¼ of the NE ¼ of Section 13, T79N, R20W, and the SW ¼ of the NW ¼ of Section 18, and the W ½ of the SW ¼ of T79N, R19W, all in Jasper County, Iowa, in the maximum total combined quantity of 2.1 billion gallons per year at a maximum total rate of 8,150 gallons per minute throughout each year, and a maximum total of 750 million gallons per year at a maximum rate of 2,500 gallons per minute from the Jordan aquifer, for municipal purposes within and without the permittee's corporate limits consistent with its municipal distribution system and other provisions of law.
The Department has determined that this use of water conforms to the relevant criteria (Iowa Code Chapter 455B and Iowa Administrative Code 567) and recommends the permit be granted.

Tama County

The Poweshiek Water Association requests a modified permit authorizing withdrawal of water from 17 existing alluvial wells and five newly-constructed alluvial wells, each approximately 50 feet deep, on land generally described as the NW ¼ of Section 2 and the NE ¼ and SW ¼ of Section 3, and five newly constructed alluvial wells, approximately 30 to 36 feet deep, on land generally described as the NE ¼ of Section 4, all in T82N, R15W, Tama County, Iowa, in the maximum quantity of 1.2 billion gallons per year at a maximum rate of 3,350 gallons per minute throughout each year for municipal and rural purposes within the boundaries of the Poweshiek Water Association District, covering all of Tama, Poweshiek, and Iowa Counties and portions of Benton, Mahaska, Marshall, Black Hawk, Jasper, Keokuk, and Grundy Counties all in Iowa, consistent with those established service boundaries and with other provisions of law.
This permit modification entails the construction of five new production wells to increase well redundancy, as referenced above.
