DES MOINES – The DNR Water Quality Bureau has the following draft water use permits posted for public review. Water use permits regulate how Iowa’s water resources are allocated to ensure facilities use water efficiently and responsibly, at rates and quantities consistent with permit conditions.

As part of the permit review process, the public has the right, and is encouraged, to comment on draft water use permits. Please submit any comments to wateruse@dnr.iowa.gov by 4:30 p.m. on the last day of the comment period.

Blue Grass Enterprises requests a new permit authorizing withdrawal of water from one existing Silurian/Devonian well, approximately 430 feet deep, located on land generally described as the SW ΒΌ of the NE ΒΌ of Section 27, T85N, R07W, Linn County, Iowa, in the maximum quantity of 150 acre-feet per year at a maximum rate of 500 gallons per minute from April 1 through October 30 of each year for specialty irrigation purposes (watering of sod) on the above-described land and property.

The Department has determined that this use of water conforms to the relevant criteria (Iowa Code Chapter 455B and Iowa Administrative Code Chapter 567) and recommends the permit be granted.

The City of La Motte requests one modified municipal-type water use permit authorizing withdrawals of water from one existing and one proposed Upper Ordovician Saint Peter Sandstone well, each approximately 865 feet deep, on land generally described as the S Β½ of the SE ΒΌ of the SW ΒΌ of Section 30, T87N, R3E, Jackson County, Iowa, in the maximum quantity of 23.6 million gallons per year at a maximum rate of 240 gallons per minute throughout each year for municipal purposes within and without the Permittee's corporate limits consistent with its municipal distribution system and other provisions of law.

This permit modification represents the increase in yearly withdrawal quantity from 18.0 million gallons per year to 23.6 million gallons per year (to accommodate system growth), and an increase to the instantaneous pumping rate from 150 gallons per minute to 240 gallons per minute. In addition, a new service well (Upper Ordovician Saint Peter Sandstone) is being added, as detailed above.

The analysis indicates that the requested amount of water is available, and can be used in a beneficial way.

The City of Moville requests a permit authorizing withdrawal of water from two existing buried channel gravel wells, approximately 137 to 174 feet deep, and one existing and two proposed Cretaceous Dakota sandstone wells, approximately 244 feet deep, located on land generally described as the S Β½ of the SW ΒΌ of Section 29, T89N, R44W, Woodbury County, Iowa, in the maximum quantity of 150 million gallons per year at a maximum rate of 950 gallons per minute throughout each year for municipal purposes within and without its corporate limits consistent with its municipal distribution system and other provisions of law. This modification of Water Use Permit No. 3753-M7 authorizes an increase from the maximum rate of 750 gallons per minute and adds two Cretaceous Dakota sandstone wells.

The Department has determined that this use of water conforms to the relevant criteria (Iowa Code Chapter 455B and Iowa Administrative Code Chapter 567) and recommends the permit be granted.
