Riverton, Iowa - Significant portions of the pumped wetland at the Riverton Wildlife Management Area, near Riverton, are currently dry until a Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA)-led project to repair damage to the levees/dikes can be completed.
“Having to wait for FEMA flood damage repairs to be completed, has made it so that we will not be able to fill the north walk-in hunting area until possibly as late as November. We have also had to stop filling the main boat area on the north main marsh because of similar repair delays. Fortunately, if the weather cooperates, we should be able to continue filling the main boat area very soon, as that work is nearly completed, and there is a good amount of huntable water south of town,” said Matt Dollison, wildlife biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Nishnabotna Wildlife Unit.
The nine-day teal only hunting season opens Sept. 6.
