The spring run shooting range will be closed July 21, to allow for a $400,000 renovation and upgrade project that, when finished, will feature covered shooting structures, concrete walkways, steel baffles, and more.
The project was funded by a $50,000 donation by the Dickinson County Conservation Board and a grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Work is expected to be completed by late fall.
The existing shooting range, located within the Spring Run Complex, consisted of concrete culverts pointed at small earthen berms to contain projectiles, and an open area adjacent to the culverts for clay targets.
Plans for the new range include a 15-foot tall earthen backstop with nine-foot tall side berms for a 30-yard and a 100-yard range. A series of steel baffles will be added to contain projectiles and covered shooting structures will provide shelter along the firing line. Concrete sidewalks throughout the range will provide ADA access to firing lines as well as the firing lines for clay target shooting.
