DES MOINES – As the seasons shift and cooler days set in, a new DNR web page makes it easier to explore outdoor experiences that are accessible to all.

Iowa’s Accessible Outdoors highlights locations across the state where visitors can enjoy accessible activities like trails, fishing piers, playgrounds, picnic areas, scenic views and overnight stays. Each experience has been reviewed in person by DNR staff to ensure there are accessible pathways, nearby parking, and—in most cases—restrooms.

“The Accessible Outdoors web page is an open invitation to explore state parks in new ways—whether it’s a walking trail surrounded by fall colors, a lakeshore picnic, or a scenic overlook with a view,” said Andrew Place, asset manager with the Parks, Forests and Preserves Bureau.

The site provides detailed descriptions of each attraction and its amenities, and the list of locations and recreational activities will continue to grow as more parks are evaluated.

Visitors are encouraged to contact park staff before their trip with questions, requests for special accommodations, or ideas for improving accessibility.
