DES MOINES – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources' Financial and Business Assistance Section is hosting an Iowa Organic Waste Management stakeholder event. The meeting will take place online on Monday, October 27, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The purpose of this event is to review the results of a nearly five-year process focused on sustainable materials management. This stakeholder-driven initiative was led by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and funded by a Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling (SWIFR) grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Four material categories, including organics, were selected for discussion on potential strategies to reduce waste and develop disposal alternatives. Stakeholder event attendees will have an opportunity to discuss these results and provide input on possible next steps to be considered in the development of an Iowa Organic Waste Management Plan.

Stakeholder Event Agenda:

  • Recap of recent SMM Project activities
  • Presentation of results and recommendations from the recently completed Food Waste Prevention and Management Study
  • Presentation of SMM - Vision for Iowa Plan Recommendations for Organic Waste
  • Statewide Organic Waste Management Planning Session
    • Discuss, identify, and rank potential priorities for consideration
    • Explore potential strategies, recommendations, and timelines
    • Discuss next steps

This event is open to anyone interested in learning more about organic waste management in Iowa.
