About the Park
Dedicated in 1920 as Iowa’s second state park, Lacey-Keosauqua State Park spans 1,653 acres and offers ample opportunity for fishing, hiking, camping and swimming. Oak-hickory bluffs and valleys characterize the park, including a three mile trail along the bluffs of the Des Moines River.
Lacey-Keosauqua is a historic river crossing site along the Mormon western trek in the mid-19th century. Many of the park’s structures were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s and are available for day-use.
Plan Your Visit
- Hike 13 miles of trails at Lacey-Keosauqua, winding through valleys and cliffs along the Des Moines River. Diverse wildlife and plant species can be seen along the trails. The park is a popular spot for bird watching in the spring. A series of Native American burial mounds from the Woodland Culture overlook the Des Moines River. These are sacred locations, so please avoid walking on or disturbing the mounds.
- Boat at the picturesque 30-acre lake or swim at the sandy beach area. Boating is limited to electric motors. The Beach house Lodge is located near the lake and is ADA accessible. Fishing is also popular at the lake or along the Des Moines River, and the Lake Sugema fishing pier offers convenient access to the water.
Stay overnight in one of six family cabins or at the park’s campground. All cabins include modern facilities such as a cook-top stove, microwave, refrigerator, and cookware; one cabin is ADA accessible. The campground offers beautiful, shaded areas with electric and non-electric sites, modern restrooms and showers, and a trailer dump station. One-fourth of the campsites are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and advanced cabin and campsite reservations can be made through the online reservation system for Lacey-Keosauqua State Park.
*Firewood sales are available Memorial Day weekend through mid-October through the park’s Friend’s Group and camp hosts.
- Reserve one of two open shelters for an outdoor gathering during your visit. A day-use lodge and beach lodge are available for large events and can be reserved through the online reservation system for Lacey-Keosauqua State Park.
Concessions
Concession services include firewood and ice sales available Memorial Day weekend through the third Sunday in October from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
