Spring electrofishing indicated a low to moderate abundance of Largemouth Bass. However, fish of all sizes are available to anglers. The largest Largemouth Bass sampled was 16.8 inches and weighed 2.63 lbs. There are good numbers of panfish available to anglers. Bluegills mostly up to 8 inches are available to anglers. Crappies are mostly in the 6-8 inch length range, however, there are some crappies over 10 inches available to anglers. There are good numbers of Channel Catfish mostly in the 12-22 inch length range, but larger fish are available to anglers. Blue Catfish have been stocked in Lake Icaria since 2019. Most of the Blue Catfish are within the 12-15 inch length range. Walleyes if all sizes are available to anglers in moderate abundance. Walleye up to 28 inches have been observed at Lake Icaria.(2022)

Iowa-Caught Fish Are Safe to Eat, In Almost All Cases

The vast majority of Iowa’s streams, rivers and lakes offer safe and high-quality fish that pose little or no threat to human health if consumed. Some limitations may apply for young children and pregnant women. Here’s a Fish Consumption Fact Sheet from the Iowa DNR and the Iowa Dept. of Public Health for more information. Here is a list of current fish consumption advisories for Iowa lakes and rivers.
