How do I create an account?

To Create an Account in the DNR Online Training Registration and Tracking System (OTRATS), click on the link 'Create Account' in the menu on the left hand side of the home page https://www.iowadnr.gov/training. Then provide the information as requested on the Account Registration wizard to create your account. When complete you will have an Account Id as firstname.lastname@iowaid and a Password for that account as well. If you need step-by-step instructions on setting up your Enterprise A&A account, visit the link https://entaa.iowa.gov/entaa/ssohelp.jsp#def_userid. For further assistance with setting up an Enterprise A&A account you can call the helpdesk number 800-532-1174.

When you are finished establishing the Enterprise A & A Account you will need to sign in to the DNR Online Training Registration and Tracking System (OTRATS) using the main menu on the left hand side of the home page https://www.iowadnr.gov/training.

Personal Identification options

Social security number can be omitted if you are an Iowa resident and choose to provide your Iowa DOT issued driverís license number or Iowa DOT issued Identification Card number instead of the social security number. The Iowa DOT can process an Iowa Identification Card to an Iowa Resident regardless of age. Minors must be accompanied by their parent/guardian in order to obtain items from the Iowa DOT. Please contact the Iowa DOT if you have further questions about obtaining drivers licenses or identification cards.

What does affidavit mean?

An affidavit is for people without a social security number such as Amish, foreign nationals, people living in the United States who are not citizens of the United States.

How do I create an account for my child and/or spouse and get them signed up for a class?

After you have signed in with your Enterprise A&A Account, you will then be presented with your profile page. In the profile section, click the button that reads "Edit".

Next, click the tab that reads "spouse/children". Then click "Add Spouse/Child". After adding someone click the "save" button. Repeat the steps for other children in your family. The information required for each person will be matched up at a later date with the Electronic Licensing System for Iowa (SSN, Iowa driverís license or non-operator identification card number, eye color, height, weight, address, etc.)

Individuals age 11 and older can have their own account instead of going under the parentís account as long as the child has a different email address. Once these steps are taken you can click the "home" button, find the class you want to sign up for and register yourself and/or child into the class.

Why does the system require so much information about an individual?

The information required for each person will be matched up at a later date with the Electronic Licensing System for Iowa (SSN, Iowa driverís license or non-operator identification card number, eye color, height, weight, address, etc.)

How can I remove someone from my account?

Sign into the Online Training Registration and Tracking System using your account id and password. In the gray Profile box click the Edit link. Click the Spouse/Children tab. Click the name of the person you wish to split away from your account. The tab Update Spouse/Child Profile will have a Split Account button at the bottom of the page. After clicking the Split Account button the system will ask you if you are sure you want to split. If so, click Ok. The system will provide the information about that person along with important information to review prior to proceeding.

Important Information: On clicking the "NEXT" button at the bottom of the page you will be directed to the Enterprise A&A account creation wizard. You will need a unique email address to successfully split the secondary account from the primary account.

How do I remove myself from a class?

To cancel your registration sign into the Online Training Registration and Tracking System (OTRATS) and it will take you to your profile page. In the gray box titled classes you will see which classes you are signed up for. Choose the class you wish to remove yourself from. The next screen will provide you with a box to check to Cancel Registration. Mark the box then hit next.

How do I remove my child from a class?

If you are signed up for the same class as your child and your child is listed on your account with you then sign into the Online Training Registration and Tracking System (OTRATS) with your account id and password which will take you to your profile page. In the gray box titled classes you will see which classes you are signed up for. It would also list the children on your account whom are also signed up for that same class. Choose the class you wish to remove your child from. The next screen will provide you with a box to check to Cancel Registration. Mark the box then hit next.

However, if your child has their own account then have him/her sign into their account with their account id and password. Take the same set of steps mentioned.

How do I find the details about the class that I signed up for?

How do I find the details about a class that my children are signed up for under my account?

Sign into the Online Training Registration and Tracking System (OTRATS) with your account id and password which will take you to your profile page. In the gray box titled classes you will see which classes you are signed up for. No classes will appear there unless you are registered as a student for a class of some sort. Click the more button underneath of the display area that the class date and time would have appeared in. This will then show your childrenís class registration information. Now click the class that you wish to obtain the details on. This will open up the details about the class such as date, time, location and any additional information notes.

I keep getting emails from DNR about creation of a new class I was interested in. How do I stop getting these emails?

Sign into the Online Training Registration and Tracking System (OTRATS) with your account id and password which will take you to your profile page. On the top right corner of the gray boxes you will see 'Your Messages'. Click on it and then go to the row of the class which you want to stop watching. Click on 'Delete Watch' and you should not get anymore emails regarding that class.

Does my child need hunter education to purchase a deer or turkey license?

Iowa residents under the age of 16 hunting under the direct supervision of a fully licensed adult age 18 or older may hunt without having taken and passed a state sanctioned hunter education course provided that the ratio is one child per adult. The Iowa resident child must have their own deer or turkey license for which they are hunting. Nonresidents must have hunter education, a nonresident hunting license, the habitat fee and the deer or turkey license for which they are hunting. You can find classes online by searching from the DNR Online Training Registration and Tracking System (OTRATS) Home page at www.iowadnr.gov/training/. On the webpage you can search for a course in a county near you.

Why aren't there more classes?

Hunter education is taught by volunteers. It takes a lot of time and effort by these volunteers to put together classes that will provide the students with all of the knowledge they will need to be a safe and successful hunter.

How can I get a class set up in my area?

Contact your Recreational Safety Officer and work with him/her to contact other instructors that would be willing to help put on a class. You will also want to make sure there are more interested students in the area. You may also contact your local conservation officer.

Do I have to take the class in the county that I live in?

No, you may attend a class in any county.

Is there a set time for classes in each county?

Some counties will have classes the same time each year but the best way to find a hunter education class is to check the website. The website is updated each time an instructor sets up a class. Instructors do sometimes advertise locally as well via flyers, radio announcements or newspaper ads.

What is the cost to take hunter education?

The traditional classes are free of charge. However, be sure to read the additional information section of the class details in case there are any associated fees such as lunch provided or room rental. The online hunter education classes do have fees associated with them and the details can be found at http://www.iowadnr.gov/law/hunter/education.html.

Do I need hunter education if I already took bow hunter education?

Yes, depending on your date of birth. According to Iowa law a person born after January 1, 1972 must have taken and passed a state sanctioned hunter education course in order to purchase a hunting license in Iowa. Bow hunter education does not meet that criteria and does not replace hunter education.

Are there substitutions for hunter education such as military training, law enforcement training, etc?

No.

What if I lost my hunter education certificate?

An Iowa issued hunter education certificate duplicate may be purchased from any ELSI (Electronic Licensing System for Iowa) vendor during regular business hours.

What if I took hunter education in another state?

Iowa recognizes hunter education certificates issued by another state and some foreign nations. If you lost your hunter education certificate contact the state which issued you the original.

How can I help teach hunter education?

If you have already taken the hunter education course, you can go to a new instructor workshop and become a hunter education instructor. From there you can make contact with your chief instructor, local conservation officer, or recreation safety officer and either help with existing courses or start your own.
