  America's Boating Course    

United States Power Squadrons (USPS), a nationwide boating education organization, presents America's Boating Course - 3rd Edition. This course approved by NASBLA and recognized by the US Coast Guard, meets education requirements for boaters nearly every place in the United States.

America’s Boating Course is presented in about eight hours of classroom time. The required topics that all recreational boaters must know are covered, including:

• Boat handling under normal conditions

• Adverse conditions and emergencies

• Types of boats and boating terminology

• Required and recommended equipment

• Boating regulations and navigation rules

• Lines and knots

• Marine radiotelephone usage

• Trailer boating

The manual includes an additional chapter for optional self study. It is an introduction to piloting, GPS navigation and digital charts, key skills for boating on larger lakes, rivers and coastal waters.

In addition to the manual, students receive two PC computer disks. One is a home-study CD. The other is a free chart plotting program for computers.

Class registrations taken until 24 hours prior to class start date. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources offers a NASBLA (National Association of State Boating Law Administrators) approved eight hour Iowa Basic Boating Course taught by volunteer instructors, County Conservation Board staff, educational school staff and Conservation Officers. This traditional classroom setting allows students the opportunity to learn and interact with qualified instructors who have a passion for boater education and safety. The cost for the course is minimal.   Boater Education Home Study    

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources offers a NASBLA (National Association of State Boating Law Administrators) approved Iowa Basic Boating Home study Course. This boater education material is learned by studying the information provided and taking 6 separate chapter quizzes for review. The student answers the 60 question exam provided by the Department and submits the answers on the exam answer sheet. The student submits the paperwork to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources along with the appropriate fee to receive the NASBLA approved Iowa education certificate.   Boater Education Online    

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources offers a NASBLA (National Association of State Boating Law Administrators) approved Iowa Basic Boating On-line Education Course. This long-distance learning style allows students the ability to use interactive technology to learn boating basics and safe boating practices.   Boating Skills and Seamanship    

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary's Boating Skills and Seamanship (BS&S) is a comprehensive course designed for both the experienced and the novice boater. This 13th edition features all new, full-color graphics and updated text. Topics include: Which Boat is for you?, Equipment/legal requirements, Trailering, boat handling, waterway marks for navigation, rules of the nautical road, inland boating, boating safety, weather, powering your boat, lines/knots and communication on the water.

  Weekend Navigation Course    

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Weekend Navigation Course is a comprehensive course designed for both experienced and novice powerboat and sailboat operators. The course is divided into two major parts designed to educate the boating enthusiast in skills required for a safe voyage on a variety of waters and boating conditions. This course can be taught as a whole or as separate modules. Topics include: Part I Navigation and piloting without electronics, Fundamental of waypoint navigation and tools of navigation. Part II is planning with GPS and paper charts/digital charts, avoiding danger, underway with GPS and paper/digital charts, double checking with instruments, eye of the mariner, using radar, tides/winds/currents and much more.
