Spring is on its way. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) suggests finishing pruning oak trees by the end of the second week in March to prevent the spread of oak wilt.

DES MOINES - If your oak tree seems to be losing its leaves early, it may be due to a disease called Bur Oak Blight, caused by a fungus. This disease has been seen mostly in bur oak trees, but symptoms have also been found on swamp white oaks.

It may still be cold outside, but it’s time to stop pruning oak trees to prevent the spread of oak wilt.

The best way to prevent the spread of oak wilt is to not prune any oak tree during the growing season. For that reason, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) suggests to not start any pruning until at least the first frost.
