ELLIOTT—An electrical short in a well house serving the city of Elliott in Montgomery County prevented the well from coming online, and residents in this southwest Iowa town are being advised to drink bottled water only. Although the well is back online, it will take several hours before the tower refills and pressure is restored. Due to high nitrate levels, the bottled water advisory has been issued. DES MOINES – Permanent ice shelters must be removed from all state-owned lands and waters by February 20. Ice shelter owners are encouraged not to wait until the last minute to get their shelter off the ice. If a shelter falls through the ice, the owner is responsible for getting it out of the lake.

SPIRIT LAKE – The walleye fishing season on Spirit, East and West Okoboji lakes is open through February 14, 2016. After that date it will be closed and reopens again on May 7, 2016. These are the only Iowa lakes that have a closed season for walleye.

DES MOINES - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has added locations in Iowa City, Mason City, Sac City, Sheldon and Spencer to the list for its February 24 public meeting over the Iowa Communications Network where hunters and trappers can go to express their thoughts on the hunting and trapping regulations for this fall. The meeting is from 6 to 9 p.m.

POLK CITY – The Charles “Butch” Olofson shooting range at Big Creek State Park in Polk County has been close since December 20 to allow contractors to remove the old structures and install a new registration and classroom facility, add new baffles, and conduct lead reclamation and berm maintenance.

The DNR has placed the State & Local Emissions Inventory System (SLEIS) into production. SLEIS is the DNR’s new online emissions inventory reporting system. It contains four years of emissions data from SPARS (2011 – 2014), allows for simpler and streamlined reporting, and also offers the option of importing emissions data via a spreadsheet template, significantly reducing data entry for facilities with a large number of emission processes.

Last year, roughly 7,500 out of a total 1.5 million Iowa taxpayers helped boost wildlife conservation with donations to the Fish and Wildlife Fund on their state tax form. This marks the first year in the last five where contributions and the number of contributors to the Fish and Wildlife fund have gone down. Donations to all the state tax form check-offs were down on 2014 returns.

2015 started as the driest in the state since 1988, but frequent precipitation in April and May gradually eliminated drought worries by the end of the spring. Precipitation was much more evenly spread out during the year, resulting in frequent, but less pronounced flooding than in other wet years.

The Environmental Protection Commission adopted rules and a fee schedule for Construction Permit application fees starting on January 15, 2016. A new form titled “Form AF: Construction Permit Application Fee” has been added to the construction permit application process. The new Form AF provides the information for minor sources to determine the correct fee to send with their application and for major sources the necessary billing and invoice remittance information.
