Not that long ago, Iowa consisted of nearly 80 percent prairie with plants and soil that could easily soak up stormwater with little to no runoff after heavy rains. DES MOINES -- Due to forecasts of dangerously cold air temperatures and related wind chills, the DNR is postponing three Fee Advisory Group meetings tomorrow in Des Moines and four SLEIS training sessions originally scheduled for Wednesday in Cedar Rapids and Thursday in Des Moines.

Confinement site applicators attending Pork Congress Jan. 24 can also complete their manure applicator certification training. DNR and Iowa State University Extension will offer the two-hour class from 10 a.m. to noon in Room 103 on the lower level of Hy-Vee Hall at the Iowa Events Center.

DES MOINES — in 2018, Iowa received 45 inches of rainfall – nearly 10 inches more than normal. That puts 2018 second only to 1993 for average statewide precipitation, according to the year-end Water Summary Update.

Industrial and commercial facilities with "stormwater discharge associated with industrial activity" are required to obtain NPDES permits, known as General Permits #1 and #3.  A new training opportunity has been developed to help those facilities understand their permitting requirements, develop pollution prevention plans, and implement best management practices with the goal of staying in compliance.

WAUKEE - About 70 Iowa Department of Natural Resources State Parks staff will take part in a hands-on tactical training hosted by Farrell’s Extreme Bodyshaping in Waukee, on March 28. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is watching Carter Lake after juvenile zebra mussels were recently found in a water sample collected by Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) staff. Although veligers were detected, intensive sampling the past week did not find any adult zebra mussels.

A national campaign is encouraging boaters to enroll in a boater education course before the kickoff to the boating season. Many boater education courses are offering discounts or other incentives during the week of March 19-25, to students who enroll or complete a boating safety education course.
