EDDYVILLE – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating a fish kill following a discharge of partially treated wastewater into an unnamed tributary of the Des Moines River early Thursday morning.

The initial report is that nearly 60,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater from the Ajinonmoto Heartland Facility near Eddyville in Monroe County reached a storm drain flowing to the tributary of the Des Moines River. The discharge occurred between 3 and 4 a.m. and was apparently caused by a broken pipe. The discharge has stopped.  Dead fish were observed in the tributary. The extent of the fish kill is still under investigation.

Environmental specialists from the DNR are on the scene to investigate the incident. Ajinomoto Heartland manufactures animal nutrition products.
