Water levels have changed dramatically this week due to substantial rains in the watershed. The river also turned somewhat turbid due to runoff into our tributary streams. The water temps are near 80 degrees throughout the district and water levels are stable. If you have angling questions, please call the Bellevue Fisheries Management at 563-880-8781.
Bluegill - Good: Bluegills are on the bite throughout Pool 14, use a simple bobber and worm rig in three foot of water or less.
Freshwater Drum - Excellent: Drum are taken in areas of moderate current using an egg sinker and worm rig. Keep fish on ice if plan on eating them and they can be very good table fare.
Northern Pike - Good: Some pike have been seen in mixed species bags mostly by angler's bass fishing. Target pike along weedy shorelines with gaudy white spinners.
The water level at the Fulton Lock and Dam is receding and is presently at 6.4 feet, Camanche is at 10.7 feet and Le Claire is at 5.5 feet. Water temperature is around 80 in the main channel and clarity is clearing up but still stained after recent rains.
Walleye - Good: Some nice walleyes continue to be reported from sloughs and near shore wingdams. Most anglers are using crankbaits.
White Crappie - Good: Both Black and White crappie angling continues to be good in around brush piles. Small jig tipped with minnows are often the bait of choice.
Channel Catfish - Excellent: Try switching over to stink bait for post spawn walleyes. Fish in larger sloughs upstream of fallen trees.
Flathead Catfish - Good: Walleye and bass anglers are encountering flatheads in rocky habitats using crankbaits. Anglers are also targeting Flats with bank poles often with a bullhead for bait.
Largemouth Bass - Excellent: Bass of all sizes are being reported out of most of the common highly fished backwater lakes in Pool 14 such as Beaver Island, Rock Creek and Sunfish Lake.
Longnose Gar - Excellent: Wanna try to fish for something different numerous large gars are being reported biting in Pool 14.
Smallmouth Bass - Good: Look for smallmouth bass along rock lines with stronger currents. You need to fish in 1 to 2 feet of water right next to the rock.
White Bass - Good: White bass mixed in with Hybrid striped bass are being reported in good numbers near the tailwater area. Use white jig or small spinner.

The fishery of Pool 14 remains strong. Pool 14 is one of the few pools where walleye are stocked regularly to offset any loses due to the Quad Cities Nuclear Power plant. Stockings are somewhat successful and contribute 20 percent of the population on a given year. Largemouth and smallmouth bass have also been excellent fisheries in the past few years. Planning is ongoing to restore the fishery in Beaver Island complex across from Clinton, Iowa. The dredging of the complex will start in 2017.(2016)

Iowa-Caught Fish Are Safe to Eat, In Almost All Cases

The vast majority of Iowa’s streams, rivers and lakes offer safe and high-quality fish that pose little or no threat to human health if consumed. Some limitations may apply for young children and pregnant women. Here’s a Fish Consumption Fact Sheet from the Iowa DNR and the Iowa Dept. of Public Health for more information.
