Shooting sports athletes converge on Cedar Falls for Iowa’s largest trap shoot

More than 2,700 Iowa shooting sports athletes will participate in the 2021 Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) Trap Championships in American Singles, Doubles, and Handicap Trap. More than 700,000 targets will be shot by the athletes, ranging in age from grade school through high school.

Des Moines – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced its involvement in National Shooting Sports Month, in partnership with the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), by offering a series of classes teaching shooting and outdoor skills to individuals with little or no experience.

Gage O’Connor from the Ankeny Hawks Shooting Sports Team hit 200 straight clay targets at the State Trap Shoot the first week of June, besting all other shooters. But in the end his effort was not enough to hold off the varsity squad from North Scott who had the high squad score, hitting 985 out of 1,000 targets by their five person team.

Cedar Falls – Iowa’s Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) state trapshooting championship event begins June 6 at the Iowa State Trapshooting Association home grounds just north of Cedar Falls.Middle school and elementary aged athletes will begin the competition on Wednesday with high school athletes competing Thursday through Sunday. Iowa athletes from North Scott, Maquoketa, Pleasant Valley, Pella, Pella Christian, Ankeny Centennial, Gilbert, Solon, Oskaloosa and Easton Valley were frequent visitors to the winners podium at the Scholastic Action Sports Program (SASP) and the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) National Team Championships.
