COUNCIL BLUFFS – Two Council Bluffs men were rescued on Lake Manawa late Monday night when their boat filled with water due to high winds.

William Buchholz, 72, and James Tanga, 54, were fishing at approximately 10 p.m. when they started to encounter windy conditions and were returning to the boat ramp. They were about 100 yards away when the boat became swamped with water.

The two men, who were treading water offshore, were rescued by Lake Manawa State Park Ranger Aaron Johnson and the Council Bluffs Fire Department. Buchholz was taken to Mercy Hospital.

Because of the high winds, Johnson had been monitoring the boats’ progress as it crossed the lake and was close by when it was not able to go any further.

While there were life jackets on board the boat, neither of the men had them on when they entered the water.
