FY 2019 Quarter 4 IUP Update

Walleye season closes Feb. 14 on Iowa Great Lakes

SPIRIT LAKE – The walleye fishing season on Spirit, East and West Okoboji lakes is open through Feb. 14, 2019.  It will close after that date and reopen on May 4, 2019. These are the only Iowa lakes that have a closed season for walleye.

DES MOINES -- Due to forecasts of dangerously cold air temperatures and related wind chills, the DNR is postponing three Fee Advisory Group meetings tomorrow in Des Moines and four SLEIS training sessions originally scheduled for Wednesday in Cedar Rapids and Thursday in Des Moines.

Man dies in coyote hunting incident

Commission approves extending Dubuque special deer management zone seasons to increase deer samples

Iowa hunters in the Dubuque area have the opportunity to extend their deer hunting season and help the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) sample more deer for chronic wasting disease in and around their city. The Natural Resource Commission of the Iowa DNR approved the Jan. 26 to Feb. 10 deer management zone season extension Wednesday.

It’s 10 o’clock on a summer night along a gravel road anywhere in Iowa. In the farm pond next to the road a raucous chorus of male frogs are making themselves heard as they vie for mates. A volunteer stands clipboard in hand, ear cocked, mentally sorting out each of the calling species which are using this seemingly ordinary pond. 

DNR seeking public comment for proposed rules for state parks and recreation areas

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is currently seeking public comment for the proposed rule making to implement Senate File 2389, passed by the Iowa Legislature in April 2018, allowing the DNR to establish rental fees at state parks and recreation areas.

Chickadee tax check-off declines in 2017

Last year, more than 7,500 Iowa taxpayers helped boost wildlife conservation with donations to the Fish and Wildlife Fund on their state income tax form, a decline of about 400 from 2016. Donators represent about 0.4 percent of total tax payers in Iowa.

After an unusually mild winter, cold weather has finally arrived across Iowa and is covering previously open lakes and ponds with a layer of ice. But anglers are cautioned that just because arctic weather is here, they shouldn’t abandon their ice safety practices.

Air Quality permits under review

DES MOINES – The DNR Air Quality Bureau has the following draft permits up for review. The permits help protect Iowans’ health and the air where we live. DNR’s permitting staff review the applications to ensure facilities comply with state and federal air quality standards. The public has the right and is encouraged to comment on draft permits.

Peosta, Iowa - Deer hunters who hunt in Dubuque County take note– chronic wasting disease (CWD) has shown up in your area. A tissue sample collected from a road killed deer 2-1/2 miles southeast of Dubuque has tested positive for the always fatal disease.

Olofson range to hold Learning to Hunt series on turkey hunting

DES MOINES — in 2018, Iowa received 45 inches of rainfall – nearly 10 inches more than normal. That puts 2018 second only to 1993 for average statewide precipitation, according to the year-end Water Summary Update.

January antlerless deer season begins Friday in four counties
