Instead of sitting high and dry for harvest and fall manure application, virtually every county in the state now has saturated soils, ponded fields and high running streams. Manure applicators are waiting for that one dry week, and producers are worrying about emptying pits and compacting soils

The new electronic manure management plan application or eMMP rolled out March 23 when personal identification number (PIN) letters were mailed to one owner of each confinement facility needing an MMP.

Letters went out from DNR March 22 regarding the new electronic manure management plan (eMMP) application. DNR sent only one letter per facility site providing a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to owners of confinement facilities who must file manure management plans. If you are a co-owner who did not receive a letter, please work with your ownership group.

Last month 89 of Iowa’s 99 counties notified DNR that they plan to use the master matrix to evaluate construction permit applications and proposed locations for animal confinements during 2018 and January of 2019.

DES MOINES – In January, 89 of 99 Iowa counties notified DNR that they plan to evaluate construction permit applications and proposed locations for animal confinements by using the master matrix.

Again, 88 of 99 counties notified DNR that they plan to use the master matrix to evaluate construction permit applications and proposed locations for animal confinements during 2017 and January of 2018. Supervisors in Davis, Decatur, Des Moines, Keokuk, Lee, Mahaska, Osceola, Plymouth, Wapello, Warren and Washington counties did not pass a construction evaluation resolution, so they will not be using the master matrix this year.

Unfortunately the end of summer is the worst time for underwater dwellers. In August and September, temperatures are often high, oxygen levels tend to be low and if stream levels are low, fish and other water critters can be especially vulnerable.
