Grants available for fishing and boating education programs in Hispanic communities

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ Fish Iowa! angler education program has partnered with the Recreational Fishing and Boating Foundation’s (RBFF) Vamos A Pescar program to provide funding to local 501(c)(3) organizations to support local efforts to educate and engage families in high-density Hispanic communities through programs, classes and fishing activities.

Industrial and commercial facilities with "stormwater discharge associated with industrial activity" are required to obtain NPDES permits, known as General Permits #1 and #3.  A new training opportunity has been developed to help those facilities understand their permitting requirements, develop pollution prevention plans, and implement best management practices with the goal of staying in compliance.

Faith Bruck with Logan-Magnolia High School is the 2018 recipient of the Brass Bluegill award from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fish Iowa! program.In 2015, Logan-Magnolia Schools’ science teacher K.C. Kersten got a grant through Monsanto to develop a fishing pond and wetland area next to the school. SPIRIT LAKE – The walleye fishing season on Spirit, East and West Okoboji lakes is open through Feb. 14, 2018.  It will be closed after that date and reopens again on May 5, 2018. These are the only Iowa lakes that have a closed season for walleye.
