HUBBARD – The DNR is onsite investigating a manure spill about two miles northeast of Hubbard in Hardin County.

The spill occurred late Tuesday as S & K Custom was land applying manure from the Iowa Select Winter Finisher facility. When a dragline ruptured, about 1,000 gallons of manure spilled running into an underground tile intake.

Manure reached a small creek, which the manure application company dammed. S & K Custom pumped and land applied contaminated water from the creek over night to prevent a fish kill downstream.

Today DNR field tests show low ammonia levels at the tile outfall and above the dam, with non-detects for ammonia downstream. DNR environmental specialists did not find any dead or live fish in the creek.

The DNR will monitor cleanup activities and consider appropriate enforcement action.
