Iowa’s State Forest Nursery has a need of seed to propagate some of their seedling stock this coming year.

The nursery is seeking seed from three specific tree species and will pay the following prices:
black walnut ($2 per bushel)
red oak ($30 per bushel)
swamp white oak ($50 per bushel)

Four buying stations have been set up throughout the state; the State Forest Nursery in Ames (800-865-2477) and at Montrose (515-291-5685), Stephens State Forest (641-774-4559) in Chariton and Yellow River State Forest (563-586-2090) in Harpers Ferry. To schedule a time to drop off seed, call the appropriate location weekdays, during normal business hours. Seed will be purchased through Nov. 13 or until the nursery’s need is met, whichever comes first.

Seed should be fresh and in good condition, free of debris like sticks and leaves. If you have questions regarding what makes a good viable seed contact the nursery at 800-865-2477, Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM.

The state forest nursery provides low cost, native seedlings to help improve existing woodlands, wildlife habitat and water quality. For more information on available nursery stock for your property, contact the nursery at phone number above or visit www.iowadnr.gov/seedlingcatalog
