What's new - this program has moved to the
Iowa Department of Public Health (off-site)
The Iowa Department of Health now handles the Grants-to-Counties program. Under this program funds are transferred to the county environmental health programs to be used as incentives to:
- plug abandoned wells,
- test water from private wells for bacteria and nitrates and
- renovate older wells which are in poor condition
The goal of the well testing and well plugging and renovation program is to prevent further contamination of Iowa's groundwater. The WSO Section, which previously administered the Grants-to-Counties program, set up under the Groundwater Protection Act of 1987, continues to provide technical support to the counties concerning well testing, plugging and renovation.
