Lost Grove Lake holds lake walk, blue gill release
About 50 residents learned about Lost Grove Lake's history, management and future plans at a recent lake walk.

Speakers at the June 2007 event included Lost Grove Lake project coordinator, Martin Ahrndt; DNR Fisheries Biologist, Don Kline; and NRCS Soil Conservation Technician, Laurie Ahrndt.

After the presentations, several people took the opportunity to hike through the tall grasses that surround the lake. The day was capped by visitors aiding Don Kline in the release of 100 blue gills into the lake. These blue gills will add to the aquatic life started by the 200 bass and 1,500 catfish released into the lake in September 2006.

Lost Grove Lake taking part in snapshot water quality sampling
Volunteers can take part in water sampling at Lost Grove Lake.
One of the beneficiary ways volunteers can help Lost Grove Lake is through IOWATER monitoring. Volunteers collect information on the levels of nitrates, nitrites and a vareity of other chemicals in Lost Grove Lake. From there anyone from around the state can view the results.

Streams in and around the cities of Davenport and Bettendorf have been monitored on a regular basis by the City of Davenport's Water Pollution Control Plant since the mid 1970s for a variety of chemical parameters. While this long-term monitoring program of 41 city sites provides valuable data to evaluate trends in water quality for urban rivers and streams, what was missing was a picture of water quality throughout all of Scott County, including streams in the rural area of the county. If pollutants were found, what might be their source?
