Efforts underway to protect 1,400 feet of rapidly eroding Lake Macbride shoreline
Have you driven along Cottage Reserve Road lately and looked outside the window? More than likely your eyes focused on beautiful Lake Macbride and not the eroding shoreline that is hidden by the guardrail.
The Lake Macbride Watershed project is teaming up with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Johnson County Secondary Roads, Army Corps of Engineers, and Cottage Reserve residents to protect 1,400 feet of rapidly eroding shoreline along Lake Macbride.
Approximately 250 tons of soil, or enough to fill 17 dump trucks, are estimated to erode directly into Lake Macbride just from the shoreline along Cottage Reserve Road every year. For the past several years, the Secondary Roads Department has been installing temporary measures to stabilize the shoreline in order to protect the existing roadway.
A joint funding effort is needed in order to make this project a reality. Funding decisions will be announced by June 2008.
