The flood plain management program is responsible for establishing and implementing a program to promote the protection of life and property from floods and to
promote the orderly development and wise use of the flood plains of the state. It accomplishes this through the administration of a state flood plain permit
program, working with communities and counties to develop and administer local flood plain management programs, coordinating the National Flood Insurance Program,
administering the state's dam safety program, and assisting the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Iowa Emergency Management Division in responding to
flood disasters.
