Solid Waste Alternatives Program Advisory Council

New legislation
A new pilot program will give opportunities to up to six solid waste planning areas to expand the scope of their programs. The pilot project is called the Environmental Management System Designation Program (EMS), established by the 2008 Legislature.

With EMS, planning areas will concentrate on several areas in order to improve the environment including: yard waste management, hazardous household waste collection, water quality improvement, greenhouse gas reduction, recycling services and environmental education.

Under the EMS Designation Program, a planning area will be evaluated by the progress of their services rather than exclusively by Iowa's other solid waste diversion goals.

Leslie Goldsmith, who is new to the DNR, is the Comprehensive Planning Program Coordinator and will be assisting communities participating in the pilot program.
