Iowa DNR: Scrap Tire Education

The DNR has partnered with the Iowa Association of School Boards offering matching grants to Iowa schools in the form of recycled rubber playground tiles as a means of improving accessibility and safety of school playgrounds. Twenty-two schools were awarded grants across the state.

In addition to providing matching funding, selected schools held an educational program showcasing the long term benefits of environmental responsibility and recycling. A key educational message for school children is that the rubber playground tiles were once on the family car or truck, the tires were processed in Iowa, the tiles were then made in Iowa and now the kids are playing on them in the school playground.

Funding to continue scrap tire education activities sunset in 2007. Currently no waste tire management funds are available to continue public awareness and education efforts.
