Twenty-four students and host companies are participating in the DNR's 2009 Pollution Prevention Intern program. During their 12-week internships, students will research methods of reducing waste, conserving energy and preventing pollution at their host companies, and compare the costs of current procedures and proposed practices and in most cases will begin implementation. Host companies will receive a comprehensive report of the intern's work and recommendations to continue implementation and maintain new processes implemented.

Optimize the efficiency of the compressed air system in the facility.
Acument Global Technologies
Recommend improvements to reduce utility costs through water reclamation and reuse and identify energy efficiency opportunities with the use of an infrared camera.
Allen Memorial Hospital
Conduct a waste audit and develop a waste reduction plan for Regulated Medical Waste.
American Packaging Corporation
Recommend process improvements to reduce hazardous waste and disposal costs.
City of Pella
Evaluate and improve the efficiency of the facility mechanical systems.
CNH America LLC
Conduct a waste stream analysis and initiate a comprehensive recycling plan.
Diamond Vogel Paint
Reduce energy demands at the facility in the air compressors, large motors, and the chiller system.
Drake University
Develop recommendations to reduce water and energy consumption by the campus dining facilities.
EMCO Enterprises
Conduct an energy audit and develop an implementation plan for efficiency improvements.
Flexsteel Industries Inc.
Identify opportunities to reduce energy use in the lighting system and general plant usage.
General Mills Operations, Inc.
Optimize the efficiency of the compressed air distribution system and implement an on-going maintenance plan.

Conduct a feasibility analysis to recover process materials and reduce wastes generated.
Hydrite Chemical Company
Evaluate methods to reduce or eliminate chemicals used in the wastewater pretreatment process.
John Deere Ottumwa Works
Evaluate methods to reduce or eliminate hazardous waste in the paint process.
Koch Nitrogen Company
Optimize the storage process and refrigeration capacity and reduce product waste.
Linwood Mining and Minerals
Develop a process to recover raw materials from the wastewater for reuse in the process or development of a marketable product.
Nebraska Medical Center
Identify and prioritize energy efficiency improvements and develop an implementation plan.
Quaker Oats
Conduct an energy audit in the production areas and identify opportunities to improve efficiency.
Sara Lee Foods
Research and identify solutions to reduce BOD loading and conserve water.
Snap-On Tools
Determine the feasibility and savings of upgrades and improvements to the process cooling system.
Tyson Foods, Inc.
Identify and/or develop tools that would aid in identifying and maintaining viable water reduction projects and practices.
Vermeer Corporation
Identify water reduction and potential reuse opportunities and develop an implementation plan.
Hospital Circuit Rider
Circuit Rider project to identify mercury and reduce energy in medical facilities in Iowa and Nebraska.
Thermographic Camera Circuit Rider
Circuit Rider intern will use thermographic imaging technology to identify energy reduction and heat recovery opportunities in Iowa companies with the use of an infrared camera.
