Eighteen students and host companies are participating in the DNR's 2010 Pollution Prevention Intern program. During their 12-week internships, students will research methods of reducing waste, conserving energy and preventing pollution at their host companies, and compare the costs of current procedures and proposed practices and in most cases will begin implementation. Host companies will receive a comprehensive report of the intern's work and recommendations to continue implementation and maintain new processes implemented.

Identify system improvements to reduce water usage in the production processes.
Burke Corporation
Investigate process and equipment modifications to reduce natural gas usage.
Cargill Inc.
Conduct a waste stream analysis and develop a comprehensive waste management plan.
CNH America LLC
Conduct an energy audit and initiate an implementation plan to improve efficiency.
City of Dubuque
Prioritize projects and develop an implementation plan to reduce energy consumption in city facilities.
EMCO Enterprise Inc.
Optimize efficiency of the compressed air system and develop a conversion schedule for the lighting system to reduce energy costs.
Genesis Health System
Make recommendations to improve the efficiency of the boiler and steam distribution systems.
Green Plains Superior, LLC
Optimize efficiency of the compressed air system and identify opportunities for reducing energy consumption in the plant mechanical systems.
Grinnell College
Optimize efficiency of the mechanical system and evaluate heat recovery opportunities.
Hy-Vee Distribution Center
Recommend improvements to optimize the efficiency of the transportation fleet maintenance process and facility.
Iowa Health - Des Moines
Develop a source reduction plan for Regulated Medical Waste.

Recommend methods to reduce contaminates and improve efficiency of the wastewater treatment process.

Develop an energy management plan to reduce energy consumption in stores.
